Palo Alto's 'second downtown' to stay permanently car-free

Cars will not be returning to California Avenue any time in the foreseeable future. Despite concerns from some business owners, the City Council agreed that the city's "second downtown" should remain a bike and pedestrian promenade.

Retail stores with long term leases on affected streets should be compensated for the destruction to their business wrought by closing the street. Perhaps the increased profits of restaurants should be redistributed to the retailers they are suffocating.
