This is the kind of thing our government should actually be working on. Things that can actually achieve their purpose rather than wasting time on forcing people into all electric homes, for example, that won't even move the needle on the problem. Our local government especially, should be sticking to the practical things that affect our daily lives and quality of life. When the streets are clean and not falling apart and crime is down and many other things that can ACTUALLY be accomplished, only then should our council begin thinking about ANYTHING else. Council needs to do what they were elected to do, RUN THE CITY, not tilt at windmills.

One thing government could do is to stop subsidizing and encouraging building in such unsuitable areas.

For example, flood insurance is subsidized by taxpayers so people who choose to build and live in vulnerable areas don't have to pay "market rates" for their flood insurance. You should compare what homeowners who live on the Gulf of Mexico pay for flood insurance (which covers everything including full replacement) with what we pay for earthquake insurance (which covers almost nothing).

Until you fix market forces, people will continue to live in these areas.
