The cost of COVID-19 drug remdesivir: $2,340 to $3,120 per patient

Gilead Sciences, the manufacturer of an experimental antiviral drug used to shorten COVID-19's effects, announced on Monday costs for remdesivir, which it claims is far below how drugs are usually priced.

In situations like this I believe that the Federal Government has a role in bringing the price down even further by allowing generics to enter the market for this particular use of remdesivir in treating patients with COVID 19.

Created in 2009 I suspect (but may be off-base here) that Gillead has recouped much of its original investment. Even if this is not the case, it is in the public interest to distribute as much of it as cheaply as possible around the world. The U.S. ha already purchased 500,000 doses representing nearly 100% of Gillead's manufacturing capacity through September. What's the rest of the world supposed to do?
