The article notes that there are larger achievement gaps (between low-income and non-low-income students) in SMC than statewide. One relevant question is: do low-income students in SMC perform worse than those elsewhere? If they do, that is truly troubling.
On the other hand, if the achievement gap is due largely to the fact that the wealthy in SMC are very wealthy and very focused on their kids' education, perhaps this news is not as bad as it might seem.
Certainly it would not be surprising that students who grow up in families that have money, and likely higher parental involvement, would perform better than the average CA student.
Does anyone know whether the gap is due to a lower low or higher high, so to speak?
