Just three days earlier September 14, 2019 Redwood City Police Officers arrested San Mateo County Sheriff Sergeant Lou Aquino for DUI. He was released from Jail on his personal promise to appear October 23, 2019 according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. To this date there are NO charges and Sheriff Carlos G. Bolanos has refused to release the Booking photo.

Wow, this woman did something we’ve all done, crashed with no/minor injuries and no property damage, and now the sheriffs are going full steam ahead in pressing a litany of charges. Meanwhile their deputy who got arrested is out Scott free. I think as a town we need to rally with Ms Mumford as her bad decision as a CITIZEN is nowhere near as egregious as an officer committing the same crime, and getting away with it. It’s not fair that sheriffs are targeting law abiding citizens who make mistakes while allowing thugs and criminals to run around in the streets.

Driving under the influence is a "mistake"? Uh...wow.

What Ms. Mumford did is NOT OKAY. Drunk drivers kill people, even if this time it didn't happen.

What Stogner is describing – cops covering up one of their own for the same offense – is even more strongly NOT OKAY. We've got two offenses there, drunk driving, and coverup.

Bolanos/Wagstaffe covering up for Lou Aquino does NOT EXCUSE Ms. Mumford.

There is also NO EXCUSE for Bolanos/Wagstaffe/Aquino.

Almanac should report on this.

If Lou Aquino has to pay the same price a regular taxpaying citizen would for his drunk driving, he loses his job (felony convictions result in the inability to possess firearms).

Sheriff Bolanos and DA Wagstaffe have decided to do "rough justice", figuring that punishment would be too harsh. The same thing (nothing) happens if a cop commits domestic violence at home.

The particulars of this case is that Wagstaffe has not filed charges as he is "awaiting further details" that will never be provided by the Redwood City Police Department. The RWC chief will make sure of that, on orders of Wagstaffe and Bolanos.

Not unlike the Menlo Park cop who was arrested in Sunnyvale for seeing a prostitute while on duty. The union got to that Sunnyvale cop who didn't show up to testify against him. (Of course, the DA there was also in on that whopper, since they could have forced the cop to come and testify). If I'm not mistaken, the union even forced Menlo Park to restore that cop's job! Only in America, right?

Unfortunately, this happens everywhere in California, but is worse in San Mateo County. That has to do with the complete lack of ethics by DA Wagstaffe.

As you might imagine, the street goes two ways. If Wagstaffe's son were pulled over for DUI, don't expect any consequences or even an arrest. If, as a matter of "complete conjecture", Wagstaffe got into a fight with one of his brothers, SMC cops would muscle that brother to permanently leave SMC County, afraid for his life. Maybe, hypothetically, even that brother's son would get beaten up badly as part of the message to leave.

Sadly, this is the excuse for a human being that SMC residents tolerate for their District Attorney. As the above poster noted, the newspapers here like the Almanac certainly don't give voters any reason to question what is going on by actually reporting on any of this stuff.

Thanks to Michael G. Stogner for making some efforts to provide this education. We know, despite his earnest efforts, he's not making much of a difference, since he's still alive and out of prison.

I thought Wagstaffe was retiring and his deputy Karen Guidotti was going to run (likely unopposed) to succeed him, but now he's continuing on and she is retiring. What happened there? Imagine what she has seen and knows!

Lets talk about this case and how the guilty should be punished instead of "What about..."

She could have killed any one of us, any one of our children.
The flippant "Everyone does it" replies show that an example needs to be made with lessons learned to change the incorrect views that DUI is no big deal.

A heinous crime and she needs to pay dearly. The fact that a county police officer did the same thing three days earlier and will have zero consequence is just drivel by Stogner. It’s totally irrelevant to the issue of punishing people for driving drunk!
