Progress on the Bay Trail

Original post made on Feb 19, 2019

Look at the plans for the Bay Trail and it's easy for a cynic to laugh it off as a pipe dream -- 500 contiguous miles of trails cutting through 47 cities and nine counties in the Bay Area?

This seems like a really lame route. Why couldn't they bypass University Ave altogether? What are pedestrians or bicyclists supposed to do if they are walking or biking from the Dumbarton Bridge south towards East Palo Alto? Will there be bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of University Avenue? If bicyclists are riding on the right side of University Ave, will there be a new stop light to help them turn left across speeding traffic to get to this bike path?

It does seem a trail also across the SFPUC property to link the Dumbarton Bridge to East Palo Alto would serve bikers and joggers well. Even if you had to dismount to cross the tracks it would be useful.

If you're going across the bridge, this route is longer. If you are continuing north, this should be faster. My impression is that right-of-way and liability concerns usually end up being the determining factor for where these routes go.

It's avoiding SFPUC property. They probably didn't want anyone crossing it.
