Menlo Park: Council makes long-awaited decision on Draeger's loading zone

Original post made on Oct 24, 2018

The owners of Draeger's specialty grocery store, the owners of the neighboring vacant lot at 840 Menlo Ave., and the Menlo Park City Council finally reached an agreement Tuesday, Oct. 24, over where and when the grocer's delivery vehicles will be permitted to park when the neighboring lot gets developed.

Well,
Everyone has an opinion about Draeger's and the Troglio family. The Matriarch of the Troglio family passed away over 20 years ago. She headed a very wealthy family. Once the estate was settled, the property behind Draeger's became an issue for Mrs. Troglio's heirs. Once the lease ended, the rent was raised 3 fold. The late Mr. Draeger offered to purchase the property and was refused. The only word for that is greed.
The current family members took 12 years, 12 YEARS to decide what to do with what from the outside is an insignificant piece of land. The family coffers must have been deep enough to go without productivity of this land. A fallow piece of property produces NO revenue stream for the city. Now, offices and residential units will produce NO revenue stream for the city...really.
Draeger's has been a good neighbor (I lived, when a girl, at 1001 University, YES, across the street). Draeger's added a demention to the character of MY city...YES, my city born and bred. Draeger's has been an ongoing Revenue Stream for the city. Draeger's has brought those who live in Atherton and Palo Alto into our city. And Maybe, Just Maybe money is apent and taxes collected from the stores and restaurants in this city.
The planning commission has approved White Elephants in the past...but usually, the City Council, sees and rejects their folly.
Now you know why Menlo Park is being divided and representated by people who live and understand the jewel that Menlo Park was and could be again...VOTE ON TUESDAY, the 6th.

Everyone wants to ban trucks from making deliveries. How do you expect us to bring supplies to markets, pharmacies, and restaurants. BY helicopters ?
Please try to work with we trucking companies.

Draegers is fine, but long ago ceased to be a neighborhood market that it was when I was a child here. It is now an over priced market that serves the wealthy. The rest of us, who are price sensitive, shop at trader joes and/or safeway.

This was just a fight between two wealthy families. I applaud the complete streets commission for prioritizing the citizens vs. allowing trucks on menlo ave.

ps - offices and homes do bring in tax revenue. thanks
