San Mateo County and the San Mateo County Transit District spent more than $1,000,000 on a campaign designed to garner voter support to pass a 1/2% Sales Tax now known as Measure W. The Get Us Moving(GUM) campaign Web Link used for this project employed a survey to gather e-mail addresses while ostensibly soliciting opinions on how to spend future revenue. Two glossy brochure mailings, soliciting response to the GUM surveys, were sent out. https://web.archive.org/web/20171123005130/Web Link#/register "Before and After" surveys of likely voters were made by Godbe Associates to measure the results. Your tax dollars at work.
Numerous Public Record Act Requests failed to reveal the target of those mailings. I suspect they were targeted to likely voters. I was able to ascertain the identity of the firm which ran the project. It was the creation of TBWB Strategies, Web Link a political campaign consulting firm. They were the major subcontractor on the project.
You may know that such "electioneering" is permissible unless the Measure is already on the ballot.
What can we do about such chicanery? We can vote a resounding NO!
We did it in 1991 when the County Supervisors put another 1/2% sales tax on the ballot. The NO vote was more than 70%!
