Menlo Park ironing out how to get electric vehicle charging stations across city

Original post made on Jun 14, 2018

Driving around Menlo Park, it seems as though Teslas and other electric vehicles are a dime a dozen. And the numbers bear this out: the International Council of Clean Transportation reports that 15 percent of all new vehicles registered in Menlo Park in 2016 were electric, placing Menlo Park fourth among California cities that year. But as the share of individuals and households with green vehicles rises in the city, the city has to figure out how to make sure there are enough charging stations to go around, on both public and private lots.

No, the city doesn't need to be doing this. Solving a non-problem. Have they surveyed electric car owners to find out if they are having trouble finding places to charge their cars? Most homeowners can charge at their own house, there is no reason to charge if you are going out shopping or eating. Only apartment dwellers might have issues. In addition, many commercial options are coming soon, especially the Electrify America initiative as part of the VW diesel settlement. The city should not be forcing unknown technologies and demands based on what they think the future might look like. Let the market forces handle it.

As Mark posted EV drivers should be asked what type of charging (L2, L3-CHAdeMO, L3-ccs) they need.

But Electrify America initiative (which is owned and controlled by VW) is a bad example. VW says they are putting charging (EVSE) in the right locations but actually they are not (where there are already too many, and not enough to get from point A to B city, etc.).

plugshare.com shows there is many L2 (level2), but not (as Mark said) where they are needed (apt's/townhouses/condos, major work sites). There isn't enough L3 (level3). Looking at Menlo Park's boundary
goo.gl/maps/eA1SCjmxWsQ2
shows L3 should be placed where drivers want to go: just off Hwy 280, and also off 101 where there is shopping, food, drink, wifi, etc.

I have had an all electric vehicle for four years and have had extreme difficulty finding charging stations in Menlo Park. Especially at Little House and downtown Menlo Park . Aggravating! Thank you for looking into this problem.
