Menlo fire board wants more info on employee housing proposal

Original post made on Mar 22, 2018

Before a district employee's family is allowed to move into a home recently purchased by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District for $3.2 million, members of the district's board say they want a lot more information from Chief Harold Schapelhouman.

This does not add up. $500,000 to fix up a house to rent. If they want to rent it to one of the people in the FD for $3,000 a month that would take almost 14 years to just recoup the money. Supposedly they will need it for an expansion within 14 years (or why spend so much money to buy the property). This is MPFPD math. Just like calculating overtime...

Put it for rent at markey value, offer it to MPFD employees first (at most at a 10% discount) then rent it to anyone if there is no interest.

Full market value and not a penny less. Fire personnel make good money in the district.

Agreed. They make a lot more than I do.

The purpose of this is NOT to provide housing for a firefighter but to find the most cost effective way to increase the number of firefighters in the District 24/7.

The salary and pension required to add a new position would be $200k.

If a current firefighter could be induced to live in the District the net cost to the District would be significantly lower.
