Portola Valley students gather donations for Houston hurricane victims

Corte Madera School students spent two-and-a-half weeks gathering donations to put together hundreds of personal hygiene kits for Houston students and families affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Is this something that a charity in Houston asked for? All the news reports I have read say do not donate merchandise, since it is difficult and expensive to transport, store, and distribute. Much better to donate money so the charity can purchase supplies in bulk at wholesale prices and have it shipped directly to where it is needed.
