Atherton collision's aftermath: Road closed, no power, no water and flooding

Original post made on Aug 22, 2017

Saturday was not a good day for some Atherton and Menlo Park residents: A collision on El Camino Real resulted in a power outage, the closure of El Camino, and for some, flooding followed by no water for hours.

I'm not sure where the reporter got the information for this story but as one of the 179 residents who was without any power as the result of this accident for 24 hours I wanted to correct that NO residents had their power restored prior to 6A on Sunday. We were informed twice during the 24 hour period that the time to restore the power was being extended. I know because I tracked the updates on the PG&E website and was engaged with our neighbors during the entire period. Whilst this only affected a small neighborhood, for us it was quite a frustrating experience and highlighted the lack of good customer service or focus from PG&E.

Sounds like PG&E did it's best to keep you informed. Bad customer service would have been to tell homeowners nothing. So was the lack of service that they couldn't get the power restored fast enough?

If you want to place some blame, try the guy who hit the pole in the first place. I'm no fan of PG&E, but they aren't the villain here.

So PG&E did an 811 and Calwater didn't accurately locate their water main. Thank you Calwater for not accurately locating YOUR underground utility. I'll send my spoiled food bill to you. Given my trips past the site during the day it was clear that PG&E was well on track to have power restored by 4:30 pm or earlier had they not hit YOUR unidentified water line. Thank you for your incompetence.

@menlovoter
send your bill to the driver that caused the accident. That's who is at fault.

To "Local Resident," the reporter was actually correct. Initially over 800 residents were without power. All but approximately 200 of them had power restored within about six minutes. The remainding 200 (179?) had to wait until 5:00 AM on Sunday morning. I'm sorry you were a part of that group!
