Originally introduced as Sequoia 70, the intention was to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Sequoia Healthcare district. “70 Strong” is nothing more than a facade created in an attempt to justify a 2 year grant of $1,544,000 to Peninsula Family Service (PFS), and “brand“ the district as a caring custodian of public funds. That money is mostly a reimbursement for services rendered to district seniors as part of PFS’s 4 county “older-adult-services“ program. Web Link The marginal increase in services which 70 strong might bring to district seniors does not justify the grant.
70 Strong Memorandum of Understanding(with PFS)
SCOPE OF WORK (first sentence)
“70 Strong is an initiative of the Sequoia Healthcare District to provide services to support District residents aged 70-79. “
I’ve heard of “divide and conquer” as a winning tactic, but dividing beneficiaries into decades is ridiculous. I belong to Redwood City‘s “Fun After Fifty Club”, and have 2 nonagenarians on my Wednesday bowling team.
I can see why PFS would want the name change from Sequoia 70 to “70 Strong” since it would be logical for them to use it throughout their 4 county territory. And, it could be interpreted to serve those OVER 70 years of age.
