So you are going to decide which laws you are going to enforce or help other government agencies enforce? Should you enact such an ordinance are you setting an example for citizens not to follow the law should they not agree with it? Sounds to me like a formula for anarchy.

Sounds like a solution without a problem. No thanks.

"According to a staff report, in the last three years, the Menlo Park Police Department has arrested two subjects on warrants from ICE, the federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency. Both times, suspects were stopped or detained for other violation"

"Shooting of Kathryn Steinle

On July 1, 2015, a man fired a stolen gun on Pier 14 in the Embarcadero district in San Francisco, California. The bullet ricocheted off the pavement, then struck 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle in the back, causing her to die two hours later at a hospital. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez was arrested and charged with her murder.[1]

Lopez-Sanchez was an illegal immigrant from Mexico who had previously been deported on five different occasions.[2] The shooting sparked controversy and political debate over San Francisco's status as a sanctuary city. President Donald Trump has cited Lopez-Sanchez in support of his proposal to deport foreign nationals living illegally in the United States, and mentioned Steinle during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention (2016 RNC).[3]"

"(CNN)The fatal shooting of Kate Steinle on a San Francisco pier last summer -- allegedly at the hands of an undocumented immigrant deported five times from the United States -- became a focal point of an angry national debate over illegal immigration.

On Friday, her family filed a federal lawsuit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, San Francisco County's former sheriff, the federal Bureau of Land Management and the man who allegedly fired the deadly shot.
"Kate's death was both foreseeable and preventable had the law enforcement agencies, officials and/or officers involved simply followed the laws, regulations and/or procedures which they swore to uphold," the lawsuit said."

Why on earth would the City want to protect illegal activity? If I don't pay my taxes, or if I open up a business in the City without getting a license or a permit, I get fined or sent to jail. Immigration is welcome and valued in our country, but individuals who step in front of others in the line by skipping the entire immigration process should not be protected or rewarded. Simple as that.

The missing information here is the Federal government will not reembuse the Menlo Park Police Department for having spent time and turning over such undocumented people. Racial cities, counties, and States do such action out of their own budgets.

Neighbor in Portola Valley, what's a "Racial" city? Are you saying that cities and counties and states that cooperate with the federal government to enforce immigration laws are racist?

Sounds great. Let's double down. I suggest Menlo Park start a registry for residents willing to house and sponsor an undocumented victim and promote this availability on the city website. We'll be flooded with undocumented victims. We can totally afford this! Let's be an example for the rest of the country.

When too many low skilled illegal immigrants enter the job market, it depresses wages for the legal residents. It's basic supply and demand.

The illegal immigrants are willing to undercut the prevailing wage since they are hiding from federal authorities. Their employers abet them in order to pay the lower wage. The average blue collar American gets hurt because they can't compete.

It is admirable to help those who just want a better life. But in our compassion we are inadvertently hurting our fellow citizens and legal residents by undercutting their economic means.

That is the real reason many average Americans are upset about illegal immigration. Blue collar Americans follow the law and pay their taxes, then they see the political elites protect those who generally avoid paying US taxes and have broken the law.

When you break down the issue, the competing concerns are economic fairness vs. compassion. At the end of the day, people vote based on pocketbook issues over social issues. And that explains a large part how a flawed candidate like Trump won the Republican nomination and the general election.

Which is why Congress has done nothing about the problem (other than talk.) Their corporate masters want as many bodies in the country as possible to drive down wages and power of those that do the actual work. George Bush's immigration plan was a good start, but Congress turned their back on it.
