Hey y'all - Should we be worried about Atherton's anti-state pension activists dragging our school district into their fight? (see #4 regarding Woodside Elementary School District) Web Link While I think some of this gentleman's points are interesting, I'd hate for our school children to become victims of a crusade.

False. No one, let alone Peter, are "anti-state pension." We want the school board to act in a responsible and transparent manner when it comes to dealing with the pension crisis. Statements like yours only serve to be divisive. Which I'm sure is what you wanted.

The people who are concerned about pensions are not anti-pension. They just realize that pensions are being underfunded and one day the bill to fully fund the pensions will come due.

Unfortunately, what happens is that short term concerns get fully funded and the pensions underfunded. As each year passes, the shortfall gets bigger and bigger.

Illinois is a prime example. Because it had been derelict for so long inadequately funding employee pensions, 25% of the state budget is spent on pensions. The average state spends 4%.

By 2025, Illinois will be spending more of its budget to fund just the teachers' pension than it will spend in the classroom.
