Some pretty melodramatic comments ...
I love Portola Valley's natural beauty and can see why people who live there feel targeted, but come on folks ... get a grip.
Adopt a dog or two and you'll be fine while providing them a wonderful home.

@ pitchforks_and_torches, I actually disagree and regrettably do not live there. If you, as a resident, pay more taxes than your neighbor, you should have more crime prevention tools. It is my belief that if all the ask is - they are willing to pay, so let them have it. Bad guys will move on or stop (maybe even take a job at the oh so meagerly rate of $15/hr at in/out burger)
Register their plates, drive them out of town and move on

I've lived here for 30 years and this is just horrifying to me! License plate readers?? Stickers for cars? What if we are visited by someone of color (horrors!) or someone from New York???? WHAT? Do we send them stickers ahead of time? We have a black member of our family and I shudder to think what if he comes to town and people freak out?? Where are we??? And the election isn't helping this. I feel bad about the folks who had the horrible home invasions. It's so horrible to have that happen when you are home--why wouldn't they come when the house is empty??? I know it's awful, but it doesn't' make sense to live in a police state! I wasn't able to come to the Nov 9th meeting, but I'll be at the next one.

How many invasion suspects used stolen license plates? Kind 9f an easy way to defeat the lpr's. And use back roads, etc..
Ben Franklin has a quote for y'all....

@Ben Frank's B - stollen plates would actually get them flagged. ALPR's can be used to notify the authorities when it sees a stollen plate so they can deploy an officer to investigate in real-time. they can also tag stolen vehicles, wanted for amber alerts and wanted as “persons of Interest” for any investigation - very powerful tools that have purpose beyond catching PV home invaders and burglars. they're already installed many if not all of the cruisers too.

Let's get real..license plate readers are a great idea as are license plate decals.
That said, it is time to enter the modern age and allow residents to add exterior lighting to their homes.
It is a proven fact that illumination deters crime. Time to get into this era unless you want people snooping around your home in the dark.

"stollen (sic) plates would actually get them flagged"
Yes. Of course.
*IF* the systems are real time, connected, and don't produce so many false positives that the co[s ignore them.
*THEN* it may catch plates that are *REPORTED* stolen.
*WHEN* they are reported stolen.
*WHAT* good does a reader do if the crook swipes some plates from a parking lot in MP and tools on over to PV ten minutes later? No crook is riding around with stolen plates for more than an hour or two.
LPR's are a money maker for the contractors. If my 'Abner' is sneaking around, I do not want the police to report him to me.

@Gladys Kravitz - your points are *NULL* because LPR's are allready in use in PV (my l key must stick).

The real problem isn't being addressed! California keeps voting to let out " non violent " criminals out of jail early! This states liberal ideology is turning California into a cesspool. Perfect example is the Katie Steinle case in San Francisco. The killer with a mile long rap sheet, shouldn't have even been in this country was deported 5 times and keep sneaking back in and killed an innocent girl in front of her father for absolutely no reason !
