Video on the History of Prop 13

Original post made by MORRIS BROWN, Menlo Park: Park Forest, on Oct 25, 2016

The New York Times has produced a video on the history of Prop 13.

It can be viewed at:

The video brings back old memories of those of us who lived through this part of California History.

(How young Jerry Brown looked then. I'm almost exactly the same age )

Near the end, there is a segment which was filmed on Santa Cruz with Walgreens in the background.

We saved Grandma's house, but gave away the store to commercial interests.

For several years, we've known the burden of property taxes has gone from 60% commercial/40% residential to the opposite: 60% paid by residential property owners with only 40% paid by commercial property owners.

In fact, it has worsened: now residential shoulders 72% of the tax burden while commercial only pays 28%.

It's time to reform Prop 13 on the commercial side; yes, Grandma may keep her home, too.

Thanks, Morris; look forward to viewing later.
