Because it's in the body of the story? God forbid we should read beyond the headlines and actually be INFORMED.

So much for respecting the flag and the people who work daily to keep our county free and safe not to mention the honor our Menlo firefighters are showing for their fallen comrades who gave their lives on 9/11 -- 343 firefighters.
This is just vandalism pure and simple and not acceptable.

Most American citizens honor our flag. However, there is a small cadre of misguided leftists and far-right malcontents who feel that the American flag is a symbol of oppression rather than being the symbol of liberty and freedom throughout the world that it actually is. It is this small group of people who have no compunction about desecrating our great flag. I feel sorry for them because they don't seem to realize how wonderful it is to live in the greatest country in the world and how much we take our good fortune for granted.
Yes life can be a struggle at times but there is no other country in this world that offers the opportunities and freedoms as does the United States. And when you look at our military, police and fire departments who selflessly lay down their lives so that we may be free and safe, we have to pause and reflect and how truly fortunate we are.
God Bless America and may God forgive these poor misguided souls who don't appreciate the sacrifices our great military, fire fighters and police officers make on our behalf.

Thank you, Menlo Observer, totally agree with you. It's unfortunate the consuming public has no idea the sacrifices our first responders, and their families, make for us so we can live in peace and freedom.
