Menlo Park bans drones, remote-controlled aircraft from parks

Original post made on Aug 24, 2016

The Menlo Park City Council held another marathon meeting the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 23, as it heard the public comments of a full house speak out on two controversial issues: whether drones and remote-controlled aircraft should be banned from city parks, and what traffic policies the city should implement for when the Upper Laurel elementary school campus opens Oct. 17.

Great! Ban them until this new technology can have safe and sane rules applied from wither fed state or local levels.

Be safe, not sorry.

It would be prudent to set up a poll - online - to get a public opinion, before a decision like this goes into effect -Re: Drones in parks ... if flown respectfully, they are not a hazard -

If only Menlo Park would ban gas-powered leaf blowers as easily. Much more of a day-to-day menace than drones by a long shot.

Ban on drones - pending future possible changes. Right move. Thanks, council.

Nice, drones flat out banned in parks. Guess what that means everyone? They'll be flying over your homes instead. It is *legal* to fly between 350-400 feet above your neighborhood. Now that Menlo Park decided to flat out ban them in the parks (which are safe places to fly and practice flying them), they will become a nuisance over your home instead. And those who can't practice (since there's no parks for them to do so) will risk insuring you and your home because they haven't the skills to fly properly.

Good luck.

Great news about the drones. I saw a guy at Burgess park not long ago flying his drone over the park and across the street, hovering around the nearby condos. It seemed to me an invasion of privacy for the condo dwellers. I was also nervous about walking under the flying drone, a little afraid that it would fall from the sky and hit me on the head. It's also another sources of unnecessary noise pollution, like a flying leaf blower.

Well done on the park drones council. Curious though - are drones already banned over non-city park areas such as residential, commercial, civic areas, playing field, schools, roads etc.

Well done city council on the drone ban in/over city parks. Are drones already banned in the rest of the city - residential, commercial, civic, industrial etc.?

I am re-posting my husband's comment/clarification with the full text of the article. He attended the City Council meeting, and we live on Oak Court.

"I believe there is a slight mistake in this article which should be corrected. The discussion at about opening a gate on Oak Ct was only in reference to the gate between the school parking lot and the street, not between the "two de-facto cul de sacs"."

I hope some rich person just buy out Bayfront Park and turn it into a golf area or a sport complex since drones and RC planes are ban now just to teach the whining hikers and environmentalists a lession for not sharing the park with the RC pilots.

If it was not for the RC pilots keeping the park busy during weekdays, the park would have been close long time ago and most likely been a golfing area. You owe it to them you selfish people.

Instead of drones in parks, how about we actually ban things that hurt quality of life (gas powered leaf blowers) and leave a few hobbyists alone?

Or perhaps draw up some reasonable rules? Make crowded areas "drone-free" (e.g. Burgess Soccer field during a game), but allow them at open / un-crowded places like Bedwell Bayfront or Fremont Park (except during events)?

"Bayfront Park and turn it into a golf area or a sport complex"

Haven't been around long, have ya? ;-)

Tried ten years ago. Search "bayfront" and "golf". 2005. Golf isn't profitable, and there are golf courses that have a lot of openings. Sports fields are a different issue. There is a super high demand for fields and supporting both our youth with sport and our active adults.
