School parcel taxes on June 7 ballot

Original post made by Peter Carpenter, Atherton: Lindenwood, on May 31, 2016

"Four school districts have placed parcel taxes on the ballot.

Moreland, in West San Jose, is asking voters to extend for eight years and increase by half its parcel tax, to $142 annually.

In meetings, "It was loud and clear the community wants to see more science, art and music offered," Moreland Superintendent Mary Kay Going said. Revenue from Measure G would support that, as well as bolster teacher salaries and libraries and keep a lid on class sizes.

Tiny Lakeside in the Santa Cruz Mountains is asking for a 10-year, $820 annual parcel tax -- which it says will help protect academic programs, train teachers and update technology. Measure J is a steep increase from the existing $311 parcel tax. With just 135 students, Lakeside faces higher costs for special education and employee pensions.

The Jefferson Union High School District, serving Daly City and Pacifica, is asking for a 10-year, $60 annual parcel tax. The Pacifica elementary district is seeking a 10-year $118 annual parcel tax."

I would support a single MPCSD parcel tax that replaced all of the existing permanent parcel taxes and which had a fixed term. We can debate the term and the total amount of the consolidated parcel tax.

Passage of such a parcel tax would require a significant effort by MPCSD to better inform and more fully involve the non-parent taxpayers.
