Editorial: Electronic billboards on freeway? Kill this plan now

Original post made on Mar 23, 2016

It's hard to know where to begin in trying to sort out the San Mateo County manager's ill-conceived plan to boost revenue by installing billboards -- some, if not all of them, electronic -- on county-owned land along Highway 101 and Interstate 280.

The big question is what is county manager Maltie' relationship to Allvision/Outfront Media and its owners.

Amazing. We live in one of the wealthiest counties in America and our elected reps are jerking around with sneaky proposals like this? Clearly they tried to bury it and slip it through; thankfully someone noticed.

Which begs the question: why would such a wealthy county even need this kind of quick-buck, stop-gap revenue ploy? There must be a hundred places where we can raise revenue, or even better cut costs.

Something's fishy here and I hope our press and media dig a little deeper on this.

Not a big fan or more distractions while people are trying to drive especially since these are busy roadways.

I couldn't agree more with this editorial. Well-stated and directly on point. Thank heaven Lennie Roberts spotted this agenda item, thanks to Dave Pine for objecting, and thanks to The Almanac and the community for speaking out on behalf of sanity and safety. What a horrible idea to put more electronic billboards on 101 - an already overcrowded and dangerous road to negotiate without the added distraction of flashing advertising messages.

How much campaign money has Allvision promised Maltbie and the other members of the Board when running for election? Attempting to slip this by the populace has a bad odor to it.
