Keith wants to study Menlo Park to raise minimum wage

Original post made by Headlines, Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park, on Feb 18, 2016

Kirsten Keith is asking the City Council to study raising the minimum wage in the City of Menlo Park. The City Manager Alex McIntyre points out the state is already studying this issue in the legislature and there are already ballot measures on the topic as well. What do you think? Is this a good use of City resources?

Read the article, McIntyre said staff is gathering information on related initiatives for the council's Feb. 23 meeting. Also, other Peninsula cities have recently passed the same ordinance.

Minimum wage really should be handled at the federal and maybe state level. This patchwork mess of local ordinances is bad for business - not just because of the direct costs (on top of the absurd rents), but the indirect costs as well - you effectively pay a significant tax in compliance headaches.

Hey, I already got mine - no way we should raise it.

Just because po' folk can't make ends meet, I don't want to pay an extra dollar for my steak when we go out!

And I don't want to pay for the healthcare of po' folk who make and serve my food either!

What's in it for ME?

Since 1968, infrequent or inadequate increases have allowed inflation to eat away at the minimum wage’s value such that today’s federal minimum of $7.25 has lost roughly one quarter of its purchasing power. Web Link

In January the MP Council went to great lengths to establish their 72 (!!) 2016 priorities and minimum wages is not on this extensive list yet now, only a month later, Keith wants to add it.

No wonder this Council has so much trouble getting anything finished - like Santa Cruz Sidewalks, Specific Plan review etc.

@Peter_Carpenter, Keith's comment was during the priorities discussion.

"Councilwoman Kirsten Keith said she wanted to see more emphasis on affordable housing and raised the question of a local minimum wage policy if action is not taken at the state level."

What a total waste of time and energy. Oh, did I forget taxpayer's money?
This is nothing but political posturing.
