Woodside mayor steps down after one term

Original post made on Dec 16, 2015

Woodside mayor Tom Shanahan is leaving the Town Council after one four-year term. Leaving with him will be his uncommon skill at running meetings, his outspoken Libertarian viewpoint, and his abiding sense of humor.

This is truly a wise comment by the departing mayor:

"From my reading, my current opinion is that climate change is a fuzzy concept and that the degree of human contribution to it is fuzzier still. Based on current information, I would be extremely cautious in formulating public policy and public spending in response to poorly understood concepts of 'climate change.'"

It's unfortunate that our congresswoman and president don't share this wisdom.

Good luck to you, Mr. Shanahan.

It doesn't take wisdom to get the big picture on climate change. It does take an understanding of cause and effect.

There's nothing fuzzy about the trend of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and what scientists say about such concentrations based on analysis of ice cores from the deep past.

On the topic of climate change, I would be very skeptical of the opinions of people who have an abiding connection to the corporate status quo.

Uh wait, what?

"From my reading, my current opinion is that climate change is a fuzzy concept and that the degree of human contribution to it is fuzzier still. Based on current information, I would be extremely cautious in formulating public policy and public spending in response to poorly understood concepts of 'climate change.'"

1) There obviously wasn't much in the way of reading involved in coming to that conclusion.

2) The science is only "fuzzy" if you accept the deniers' line 100%.

3) Why should the opinion of a non-scientist trump the peer-reviewed work of hundreds of qualified scientists?

Thanks for your years of service, Tom Shanahan.

As regards to the climate change comment quoted above:

If you take vanilla ice cream and mix in some dog feces, it tastes like dog feces.
Similarly, if you take science and mix in politics, you get politics.

Some people see that, some people don't.
