Editorial: A means to help neighbors in need

Original post made on Nov 25, 2015

Almanac readers have for 22 years risen to the challenge of helping neighbors in need during the holiday season, and we trust that this year will be no exception. Our Holiday Fund supports 10 local nonprofits, with private donations doubled by three foundations.

St. Anthony's Padua Dining Room

"St. Anthony's serves hundreds of hot meals six days a week to people in need. It also offers emergency food and clothing assistance. Funded entirely through donations, St. Anthony's is the largest dining room for the needy between San Francisco and San Jose."

Funding is not "entirely through donations" unless one considers the grants from the taxpayer funded Sequoia Healthcare District to be donations. Taxes for those grants($90,000 for the current fiscal year), come from property owners in the Sequoia Healthcare District, yet benefits are distributed to beneficiaries beyond those boundaries.
This funding comes courtesy of Sequoia Healthcare District Directors Faro, Kane, Shefren and Griffin. Their generosity is recognized on St. Anthony's website. Web Link

Second Harvest Food Bank

"Second Harvest is the largest collector and distributor of food on the Peninsula, distributing about 52 million pounds of food last year. Thanks to donations from individuals and businesses, it distributes food to more than 250,000 people each month through more than 770 agencies and sites in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties."

Sequoia Healthcare District, is the only taxpayer funded government agency listed as a "Sponsor" on the Second Harvest website. Web Link
Taxes for that sponsorship, $100,000 for current fiscal year, come from property owners in the Sequoia Healthcare District, yet benefits are distributed over two counties.

This funding comes courtesy of Sequoia Healthcare District Directors Faro, Kane, Shefren and Griffin.

My concern is that charities which expand their concept of donations to include grants from tax-funded government agencies, will be eviscerated.

In 2011. St. Anthony's Donations page on it's website stated:
"Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver"(2 Cor.9:7)"
I urge all of you to do just that. Willingly. And, the Almanac Holiday Fund matching contributions provides an opportunity to double your contribution.

IMHO, the Ravenswood Family Health Center deserves YOUR support. It serves the greater community of which we are all a part.

The center provides primary medical and preventive health care at a new facility in East Palo Alto. Most of the 17,000 registered patients are low-income and uninsured, and live in the Belle Haven, East Palo Alto, and North Fair Oaks areas.

BUT, it should not be supported by property taxes of homeowners living in the Sequoia Healthcare District! More than 84% of Ravenswood clients reside outside the District.

Is there a "Stop" button for you, Hickey? It's THANKSGIVING, for crying out loud...

I really expected to put myself out of a job by dissolving the District when I was first elected in 2002. It's taking longer than I expected. Please help.
