Sequoia Healthcare School District meeting

Original post made by Jack Hickey, Woodside: Emerald Hills, on Aug 20, 2015

The pictured announcement appeared on the home page of the Sequoia Healthcare District(SHD) on whose Board I have served for 13 years.

It is well known that SHD no longer owns Sequoia Hospital. It is also well known that the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury has questioned the District's continued collection of property taxes for a hospital which it no longer owns.

School Districts sharing the SHD geographical boundaries have benefitted from $Millions in subsidies from SHD. Not so Ravenswood, which lies in East Palo Alto, and is not part of SHD. They, and a number of other school districts, do not lie in either of the two Healthcare District's which only cover 2/3 of San Mateo County. This unequal support flies in the face of Serrano-Priest, which was focused on equalizing education funding in San Mateo County.

Not to worry. Under the benevolent leadership of SHD CEO Lee Michelson, the District has rationalized $Millions in Grants to the Ravenswood Family Clinic, 70%+ of whose clients are residents of East Palo Alto, and therefore not taxpayers of the district. This fact is ignored in a pie chart on the SHD website Web Link which has been used in referrals to the Grand Jury as justification for grants to Ravenswood.

CEO Michelson is due for a performance review at our next meeting. He currently receives compensation well in excess of $200,000 per year. He currently oversees 1 full-time and 2 part-time employees.

Will he be taking on a new role as headmaster of a school district?

Come to the meeting and find out.
