This is good and expected news for the residents of San Mateo County.
The first trial was an amazing example of favorable treatment of a defendant.
More info when I get it.

Yes, he should be retried and re-convicted.
In the other newspaper story, Wagstaffe is quoted as saying something like law enforcement shouldn't get special treatment. I agree.
But I do notice that the only time the DA office in San Mateo county prosecutes a cop is when that cop's department has turned their back on him. If the department continues supporting the cop, so does Wagstaffe.
This doesn't happen elsewhere, where the DA usually takes a harsher line on police misconduct than the police departments themselves. It's a good check and balance.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think so. Can anyone recall Wagstaffe prosecuting law enforcement when that officer hasn't been fired or otherwise disowned?
San Mateo County Sheriff Deputy Juan P. Lopez has not been fired.
Juan Lopez hasn't been fired, but the SO has certainly turned their backs on him.
The Sheriff Deputies of San Mateo County are in a tuff spot, they know whats going on. They need to protect their careers it is pretty simple.
Great message the Sheriff and DA are sending.
This officer was twice recognized by victims of domestic violence for his investigations. He also did volunteer work to help others and was in law enforcement for 20 years with a good track record. It is mind boggling to me that people are so quick to judge and think they know what really happened here. Not everything is what it seems. No one considered other possibilities or the fact that this officer cannot speak out in public to defend himself and tell what happened while this is going on. People lie to protect themselves. Abused women often lie to protect their abuser. And, in this case recent evidence has surfaced that the male "supposed victim" beat up the girlfriend, which was withheld. What else was withheld from the jury? The jury can only make a decision off what evidence is allowed. A police officer went to jail for 6 months because of someone else’s lies. The real questions here are, why has no one looked into DA misconduct? And why has there been no real and unbiased investigative journalism? People also lie to get money. I pray that none of you ever have your life turned upside down by unscrupulous people.

This thread only reports a new trial, the 5 comments are not even about Colin T. Smith.
Most of them are about San Mateo County Sheriff Deputy Juan Lopez.
Noneofyourbusiness: Please explain how the boyfriend got his severe injuries.
What has been happening with the re-trial of Colin T. Smith? Wasn't his trial last week?
