This pillow case story reminds me of the 'silver burglars' in Hillsborough in the 1970's and 1980's. When I lived there, we had a rash of burglaries whereby the burglars would break into houses all over town, and then take pillow cases from our linen closets and fill them full of silver from our dining rooms. This was a time when many of us were just beginning to use alarm systems on our homes. When the 'silver burglars' were apprehended, they turned out to be mainly drug addicts hoping to turn our silver pieces into ready cash to use to purchase PCP (Angel Dust) and other illegal drugs.
