Original post made by Jack Hickey, Woodside: Emerald Hills, on May 5, 2015

Ten Facts about the Sequoia Healthcare District ( as enumerated on the District website: Web Link

I will comment on the accuracy of the FACTS in subsequent posts, and invite readers to do likewise, both here and on the District's website.

did-you-know

1.We are a special district created by the California legislature to support health care services in southern and central San Mateo County.

2.We were formed in 1946 and we were California’s first healthcare District.
3.From 1950-1996 we owned and operated Sequoia Hospital. We no longer own or operate that facility.

4.We are funded primarily by property tax income. The average property tax payer in our District pays about $100 a year to support the District.

5.There are about 220,000 people who are District residents. Annually our services reach more than 60,000 of them.

6.We offer our own health care programs as well as financially support many others that provide services to our residents.

7.We are concerned with many health care topics including treatment of physical, mental and oral health as well as disease prevention and health promotion.

8.We return 100% of all current tax dollars back to the community with health services. We do not use current tax dollars for administration or management expenses.

9.Our five-person Board of Directors is elected. Staggered elections are held each even number year. All meetings are open to the public.

1 fact to know:

A certain politician has ineffectively been sitting on this board for over a decade, promising change, and nothing is happening other than a bunch of posts here every month. A couple emails, too.

Time to open the seat up to a person who can effect change. Politicians who cannot fulfill their promise need to go away.

Gadflies are good, but for a limited time. It takes more than noise. Make way for new leaders.

It is also a fact that two Directors, who have been sitting on the board for TWO decades, voted to increase their healthcare insurance premium reimbursements from $1,200/month to $1,500/month. Directors Kane, Faro and Griffin, the only ones voting for the increase, received increased benefits totaling $1,800 each for the first 6 months of 2013. They failed to disclose their financial interest at the time of the vote. The board finally deferred the increase until directors were newly elected. None of these directors returned the $1,800.

Well done, Mr. Hickey.

You took a perfect time to explain your ACCOMPLISHMENTS (if any, other than posting here and there about how awful things are) and instead attacked others. Fail.

The fact stands: you use your comfy position as a soapbox to attack, and sometimes attempt some half-baked plans, but with near zero results for a decade. Mirror time.

Time for fresh blood. Don't sit there and waste the spot when a young tiger can actually get work ACCOMPLISHED.

Maybe you should go back to running for governor or senate again. I hear there's an opening on the LP ticket for president in 2016.

Methinks this will be another recitation of various windmill 'tiltings' from the past decade, but list zero actual accomplishments over that decade's time. Ten years is a LONG time to do nothing but post on blogs, but Cervantes would give you an A+.

But I'll wait it out... oh, I get it! 12 years of research to correct some discrepancies on a website that no one reads.

And to think, we could have had some new, fresh face in there who would set a goal, and achieve that goal. No, lucky San Mateo County, we have an editor for websites, a poster to blogs, when we could have elected someone who would do something.

Jack - of the ten "facts", for which ones are you directly responsible?

These Facts evolved in a vacuum consisting of the CEO and, I assume, the President of the Board and possibly one other director. They never saw the light of day at a Board meeting.

"They never saw the light of day at a Board meeting."

A publicity piece on a website that no one reads (what are the stats on that site?) requires board approval?

Nice deflection. Mr. Hickey was asked about his accomplishments in the last dozen years, and by the poster 'Pancho' which of the 'facts' (one assumes: the actual accomplishment, not the mere listing of words on a website) he was part of. Zero response, lots of noise and deflection (coincidentally, his lack of response matches the actual accomplishments.)

Just another example of why we need Mr. Hickey to turn over his lance and donkey to Sancho, or another better yet, a young tiger who can get something DONE.

Menlo Voter said:
"They never saw the light of day at a Board meeting."

Why?

The CEO considers such things to be administrative and not subject to Board approval or review. Board Presidents, who have final say on what shall appear on the agenda, capitulate. Case in point, annual reports.

Someone in office for a decade, lobbed a softball about his results, and won't take a swing and list them. Don't see that every day. I have never been one for attack ads and this takes it to a new level - all attack, no explanation of results.

Pretty sad.

Duquesne correctly identifies the Fact List as: "A publicity piece on a website that no one reads...". These publicity pieces are distributed in other ways to a larger audience.

The fact is that we are seeing a revisionist version of the history of the District. This revisionist History of Sequoia Healthcare District was created with guidance from former Sequoia Hospital CEO Art Faro. See: Web Link and,
