But O’Malley is determined not to be Hillary’s doormat. He gets to the point by saying “The presidency of the United States is not some crown to be passed between two families [Clinton & Bush]". And his jibe seems to have resonated with Democrats and Republicans across the country suffering from Clinton and Bush fatigue and could quite possible spoil the coronation for Hillary.
"Hillary and Bill Clinton have been thick as thieves with Wall Street," says a pro-O'Malley Democrat. "She was very close with the financial industry, and she depends on them for money." Yet years after the 2008 economic meltdown, many Democrats are still furious that the big shot Wall Street players responsible for the meltdown were not held accountable, and it hurts Hillary to be associated with them. "This is a really, really, really big issue with progressives — that there was no accountability for Wall Street," says the Democrat.
Many Republicans also complain that the media wants a coronation for Her Royal Highness, but the consensus is that the press would like to see an actual contest for the Democratic nomination. For instance, the Boston Globe recently pleaded for Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run and stated in an editorial "Democrats would be making a big mistake if they let Hillary Clinton coast to the presidential nomination without real opposition." The fact that some major voices in the press are strongly rooting for Warren to run is a clear signal that the fourth estate is eager for an energetic primary contest. And if Warren stays out, they'll rally behind O’Malley.
