The Irish Are Coming - Tuesday

Original post made by Jim Lewis, Menlo Park: Downtown, on Mar 9, 2015

The city of Menlo Park is indeed fortunate to have the Mayor of Galway, Ireland traveling nearly 5,000 miles for a visit to our city. On Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 7:00 pm his itinerary includes being at the Menlo Park City Council meeting. This will be an opportunity to welcome him to our city.

He will be traveling with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the city of Galway (a position that is similar to a City Manager).

As many know, nearly 150 years ago, two immigrants from Galway, Ireland traveled to this area and named their ranch Menlo Park. It was located near what is now known as El Camino Real and Ravenswood Avenue. Near the parking lot of Starbucks Coffee is a large plaque mounted on the wall that talks about this further.

On October 17, 2013, former Mayor Peter Ohtaki signed a FRIENDSHIP AGREEMENT with the former Mayor of Galway, Padraig Conneely. Since that time bonds have formed between citizens of both cities, exploring ways to enhance that relationship from a heritage, cultural, educational and business development standpoint. No doubt those topics will be discussed between officials.
