Atherton may vie for accounting contract

Atherton is considering vying for a contract to provide financial and accounting services for the South Bayside Waste Management Authority, which oversees garbage collection and recycling services for Atherton, Menlo Park and other San Mateo County communities.

This is amazing. The Town of Atherton now wants to expand its footprint to start providing services to other cities? I thought that given Atherton's small size, and lack of economies of scale, it makes sense to outsource Atherton's functions to other cities and/or contractors. At least that's what happened a few years ago when the building department got outsourced. The problem is that once employees are hired to do the work of other cities like South Bayside Waste Management, their pensions kick in, Atherton taxpayers are liable, and so it goes. This is a mistake. The city council should figure out what its strategy is, since right now there obviously is no strategy.
