Original post made on Feb 2, 2015

For a city that strives to be on the cutting edge of tomorrow, Menlo Park turned back the clock in at least one respect -- crime last year dropped to levels last seen in 1999.

I would like to congratulate MPPD on the stats - a great number when you look at .00039 resulted in a complaint when contacted. Yet, the concern is no homicides were reported in 2013 and 2014 according to this article. I know we all recall the homicide by the MPPD of an armed felon - justifiable (as it was rule at least thus far) is still a homicide. Were other homicides not counted thus skewing the numbers? Again, great job MPPD - I think maybe the numbers are not accurate - by Almanac or MPPD.

The statistics reflect reported crimes. Acts of self defense are not crimes. A justifiable shooting, for example, would be considered lawful, therefore would not be a crime. At this point in time the November shooting has not been categorized as unlawful.

It's nice to know that rape and sexual assault are not considered to be "serious crimes"

Rape and sexual assaults are Part 1 crimes - the most serious category - and included in the statistics. Previously the FBI did not group sexual assault with rape; it does now, creating what looks like a jump on that category.
