Atherton council vote: Lempres now ahead of Widmer

Original post made on Nov 15, 2014

Mike Lempres has squeaked past Bill Widmer -- by one vote -- for second place in the race for three open seats on the Atherton City Council, with Rose Hau remaining in fourth place, according to the vote count released by San Mateo County at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 14.

It's very clear that Atherton voters do not want four more years of Bill Widmer and his boss Kathy McKeithen. The antagonism they show to residents, employees, and Police Officers had no place in Atherton. Rather than continue to waste taxpayer money on these recounts, Bill Widmer should respect the will of the voters and step aside so the new blood of Rose Hau and Mike Lempres can work together with Lewis, DeGolia and Wiest.

"The will of the voters"? Isn't that going to be determined by the final vote count? I think a primer in Civics 101 is in order here.

One vote difference. That's the "will of the voters" for no more Widmer? Me thinks you need to go back to school.

This election was won by the three candidates with the most votes.

What does it matter who is second or who is third? They are both elected.

The Statement of the Vote will come out in December. There were 3 seats up for election. The vote as of November 14th is:

RICK DEGOLIA (30.26%) 1703 votes
MIKE LEMPRES (23.44%) 1319 votes
BILL WIDMER (23.42%) 1318 votes
ROSE HAU (22.89%) 1288 votes.

As I said, what difference does it make if Lempres and Widmer change places?

The Initial comment by the anonymous "Do the Right thing" does an unfair disservice to both Mr. Widmer and Ms. McKeithen. First, Bill Widmer is no patsy following someone else's directions; he has a mind of his own and is the most analytical and hard working of our current Council people. Second, Ms. McKeithen stands out as one of our finest public servants over the past 25 years. She was unfairly 'tarred' by former Council members, because she had shown them to be financially irresponsible with the Town's budget ten years ago. Then two years ago they used the Library issue to beat up on her.

The implied suggestion that what we need is a Council of like minded Council members fails to recognize that there are many in the Community, who believe we do not need the continuing bullying of the majority on the council who seem bent on overly developing the Town. They are not keeping track of what the City Manager and Town Attorney do. They are in disregard of the provision in Measure L from 2012, that no public moneys should be used for the Civic Center. They allow actions to be taken, which have no transparency to the Town's residents, i.e. the over-sized Little League bleachers in Holbrook Palmer Park. What we need is more diversity of opinion, not uniformity of views with the existing Council people.

Me thinks "Do the right thing" needs to go back to school to learn reading 101. Widmer will be elected.
