LWV Candidate forum turnout dreadful

Original post made by I_was_there, Menlo Park: Fair Oaks, on Oct 10, 2014

The League of Women Voters had its usual Menlo Park candidate forum last evening, and despite what one would expect with a hot issue like Measure M on the November ballot, the turnout was very very small. Taking away press, and sponsors, I would guess about two dozen of the community was all that was present.

The one question that caught my attention was about conflict of interest and taking funds from groups with possible financial ties to the City.

All three of the incumbents, all of whom have received funds from Greenheart's committee, claimed no problem; that simply accepting "help", by passing out flyers etc., would not in anyway affect their decisions. Keith, whose kickoff party was sponsored by David Bohannon, declared she would accept donations and simply not be influenced by who gave them.

The most forthright candidate on this issue was surely Drew Combs, who simply stated he isn't taking any funds from any interest group that might be doing business with the City.

On a question about having any conflict of interest on issues dealing with Stanford, Duriseti, said she would have to recuse herself, because her job is with Stanford. Fergusson, never really answered that question, and we don't know if she would have to recuse herself from any Stanford dealings. The other candidates, all said they had no conflict.

All and all a pretty dull evening.

Maybe everyone is getting turned off by the horribly negative campaigns in the area, and they would choose to do anything else rather than listen one more time to the selfish shouting (by the same cast of characters) that passes for political discussion these days.

These are precarious days for democracy.

Kelly Fergusson's husband works for Stanford, so she would have to recuse herself from discussions that affect its property, as she has had to do in the past.

I think there were more kids outside than people inside. Which was neat to see all the kids, but the turn out was very light. Minds may be made up? I thought there was very little new as well.
