Parents, I Almost Ran Your Children Down

Original post made by Hmmm, another community, on Sep 25, 2014

When I was in the Allied Arts neighborhood the other day, I almost mowed down two young cyclists who looked like brothers. They blew through a stop sign and were in my lane. Luckily, my reflexes are pretty fast so I was able to avoid running them both down in the middle of the street. From my rear view mirror, I watched them continue on their way, and run another stop sign.

Parents, many of your are failing at teaching your children how to safely cycle. Please do something about it.

The number of times I see kids on bikes doing dangerous things -- including staring at their phones and not looking at the road and traffic -- makes me shudder. I'm not so old that I can't remember feeling immortal and behaving stupidly, but there are so many frenzied, entitled drivers on the road these days I really fear for these kids.

Hmmmm, I hope you don't take that as a slam against you. If you were one of the frenzied entitled ones, those boys might not be home tonight.

Watchful, I fear for these kids because of their terrible cycling habits, primarily. That's why I nearly hit them both, because of their bad cycling behavior, not because of any other driver, and that's why I wrote this post.
