Menlo Park: Group celebrates completion of El Camino Real tree project

Original post made on Sep 24, 2014

It's easy to take the 350 graceful trees lining El Camino Real in Menlo Park for granted, but the green vistas only came about after 15 years of dedicated work by a group of residents and battles that reached the state Legislature.

Thank you all for your vision and perseverance in making this a reality. It's a real gift to all of us. The then vs. now picture in The Almanac says it all.

With gratitude,
Tricia

Chuck, Rick and Ken did a great service to Menlo Park. They set an example of being and doing something positive. Thanks guys.

It is a fantastic improvement.

It's disappointing that it takes 15 years and the involvement of a state senator to get permission to plant trees along a road though. Imagine what a boat-anchor the state is on larger projects.

It's too bad that this group wasn't around to attempt influencing the Menlo Park City School District when, at Oak Knoll School, it pursued chopping down 5 heritage oak trees and one enormous Joshua tree planted by the Stanford Family - all of this in order to put in a soccer field at Oak Knoll School. If this tragedy wasn't enough, they tore down the magnificent trees in early summer when birds were still nesting. Why was this allowed to happen? Because school districts are exempt from the City's Heritage Tree Laws.

Thank you everyone for an incredible effort.

What Oak Knoll School did was pretty dreadful. It doesn't deserve the name OAK Knoll.

Wished they would show some BEFORE pictures as well. And now to get other cities (Redwood City, e.g.) to do the same. Beautiful all those trees. Thanks to all for taking care of this.

Sybille, open up the slide show, and your wish for a BEFORE photo will be granted.
