The tag line for this post is hyperbolic. Apparently at auction the tank did not meet the reserve price which had been specified.
There is a question mark about whether the auction agent was acting in an authorized capacity when the subsequent off market transaction transpired and perhaps more importantly whether the tendered offer to sell ever became a contractual obligation.
The $2.5M though presented to the auction company has not been accepted by the Collings Foundation, but nor has Vulcan Warbirds, Allen's company, been willing to accept the money's return.
