I think hosting a meeting and debate with Sheriff Greg Munks and Write In candidate Juan Lopez would be an excellent opportunity for the public ask some important questions. A contested election for Sheriff is healthy for our county.

As one commenter said a few days ago, there is indeed a Cain and Abel story at play here. Hope the Almanac investigates this.

I found out only recently that Sheriff Munks disbanded the Sex Crime unit at the Sheriff's office, not long after his own run-in at the house for underaged prostitutes in Las Vegas.

Why did Munks disband the Sex Crime Unit in the Sheriff's office? Has anyone in the press asked him about this?

I knew some of the detectives in that unit and they were top-notch and very dedicated.

Thank goodness Juan Lopez has raised this issue in his campaign for Sheriff. Will the Almanac be interviewing him?

Protect Against Sex Crime

Currently there is no sex crime unit at the Sheriff's Office. It was disbanded several years ago. This decision was short-sighted and flies in the face of reality on the ground, with approximately 300 such cases received a year by this office. Not to mention the need to pro-actively monitor sex registrants in our jurisdiction. I will change this, restore and fully staff the unit - to protect our children.

I am not clear as to what Deputy Lopez means when he says there is currently no sex crimes unit. Is he referring to the Sexual Habitual Offender Program which was significantly reduced and then folded into another program?

Wondering whether the Almanac will be doing an interview with Deputy Juan Lopez, who is running for write-in candidate for Sheriff. Many citizens would be interested in knowing how he would improve the Sheriff's office and his feelings about how it is being run today. Does the Almanac plan to interview both Lopez and Munks on their platforms? This affects ALL citizens of San Mateo County.
