Not only is this crime cruel - it's utterly foolish. How much money can someone get from randomly robbing a pedestrian? If they don't get caught for this crime, they're likely to get caught for a similar incident, spend a few years in jail, screw up their entire life. Very bad idea for a few bucks.

Amusing that they called the kids "Bicyclists" simply because they were on bikes. Sort of like when they say "Cyclist struck by car", and it turns out to be a homeless guy with 3 giant bags of cans in tow.
A cyclist or bicyclist, IMO, is someone enthusiastic about cycling and invokes an image in most reader's minds.
Here's the more correct headline, but lacks the hot button term "Bicyclists"

Um, really, anyone riding a bike is a bicyclist. It doesn't matter if it's a homeless person with all of their belongings, a gazillionaire on her daughter's bike, a student riding to the library or thieves on bikes - they're all bicyclists. These particular bicyclists are also dangerous idiots.

I agree, but when you use a more minor descriptor as the main descriptor in the headline it does not serve .
When you say a "Bicyclist" did it, it invokes an image in most reader's minds, but the fact that they were on bikes is very minor to the other descriptors that could have been used such as "Local teens".
I would also laugh at the headline "Car driver robs man at gunpoint" if he made his escape in a car, and I laugh at this one.

The title would make a lot more sense if the headline was "Gun owners rob man". What does bicycle have to do with the story? The real issue is guns.

What kind of an idiot goes for an evening stroll on a Saturday night in our crime laden part of town? Belle haven is only marginally safer than Mogadishu.

The issue is not guns (inflames the right) or bikes (inflames the left). It is about exercising common sense. It is also not what a citizen should be able to do; it is about exercising a little common sense so as not to expose one's self unnecessarily to potentially dangerous situations.
