It's a safe bet that few can now say what these four things have in common: asparagus, the sliding glass door, a wilderness vacation, and teaching teenagers to cook. According to a new book, Sunset magazine introduced and gained acceptance for all this and much more in Western households.

What a wonderful tribute to Bill Lane and his enlightened approach to publishing! This article includes many interesting details -- I loved reading that he refused to accept ads for guns or the NRA -- clearly a man before his time on this as well as many other issues. Our region, state and, indeed, the world, owe a debt of gratitude for the growth of concern for Earth's environment that has been fostered through the pages of Sunset.
