Destinations: Magical island

Our goal was to see the sun rise behind the row of 15 massive stone busts at Ahu Tongariki on Easter Island, but as we jolted along potholed dirt roads toward our destination in a small rented SUV driven by an exuberant Israeli who seemed to know where he was going, it looked like we wouldn't make it.

Thank you for this article and your photos. Easter Island came into my imagination in elementary school reading Thor Heyerdahl's Aku Aku. Quite a contrast from Brooklyn, NY. A couple of months ago I looked into flights, as in 'how the hell do you get there?'

It's interesting that Easter island was built up touristically (as well as its airport), as a remote Space Shuttle communications center.

Thanks for this most interesting article. It is good to be reminded that there are still wonders out there to explore and think about in our busy, high-tech world!
