So if that woman had a handgun in her purse, the thief would have stolen that along with the purse. Or are you advocating that she walk around town with an assault rifle?

Oh give gun control a rest, will you? This is an issue of safety in a quiet, safe, part of town, and this concerns me. It has nothing to do with gun control! Did gun laws prevented this miscreant from having a gun (doubtful) or did he not have one because the crime was impulsive? This crime argues for stepped up police patrols in west Menlo Park, not for more or less gun control laws. Geez!!!
