What is now the Alpine Inn on Alpine Road in Portola Valley has had a number of names and owners. This 1906 photo shows the roadhouse when it was called The Wunder, owned by German immigrants Julius and Gustav Schenkel. ==I Photo courtesy Portola Valley Archives.==

I come often to visit friends that live in Portola Valley and the Alpine Inn is a bright spot! In a place in which every business is overcharging for every item, you can get a beer and a Portuguese sausage for a bargain and as far as I can see they don't claim everything is organic so they can double the price of their product. Long live the Alpine Inn!!

When I moved to Palo Alto in 1959, it was Zots, and still is to most people of that generation.
