She can no longer endure harassment for plainly and frankly stating her views on what is best for the town she serves.
Significantly, Ms. McKeithen is widely regarded as the most experienced and best council member Atherton has ever had. She serves no special interests, and has never accepted monies from unions or other special interest groups.
The former mayor detailed the following examples of harassment, and this is by no means an exhaustive list.
- An Atherton police raid on her home.
- Police cars circling her home on a regular basis.
- Attempts to interfere with her husband's livelihood.
- Attempts to bug her home that required professional bug sweeping services.
Significantly, she emphasized the attacks were not limited to her, but also her family.
A police force that retaliates against the elected representatives who are charged with managing it is something that cannot endure in the United States of America. It has happened in totalitarian regimes in the Soviet Union, China, Argentina, Cuba, North Korea, et al., but never before here.
This reign of terror has to end. Mayor Bill Widmer needs to protect this council member. If it requires asking the governor for the national guard, so be it. Liberty and freedom must prevail.
[Editor's note: Ms. McKeithen said in a phone interview that she did not refer to a police raid on her home. Also, the council meeting was on Jan. 18.]
