Price tag swells for high-speed rail

Original post made on Nov 2, 2011

The cost of California's proposed high-speed-rail system, originally pegged at about $36 billion, has nearly tripled since the project was presented to voters in 2008, according to a business plan that the agency charged with building the new system released Tuesday.

Gordon can show his support for his powerful vision by donating his salary to HSR. Put your money where your mouth is. I'll keep my money in my pocket and not waste it on this disaster.

You can rest assured the revised cost of $98.5 billion will not be met. You can figure AT LEAST 25% in cost overruns. This thing is going to be a giant money suck for California if we build it.

Economics, cost/benefit analysis, and rational thought have all long left the station on this project. Support for it remains an article of faith for the enlightened few; HSR is a religion which must not be questioned.

how about a new vote of the people?

What voters were told was inaccurate to the point of dishonesty. The people's vote should be based on valid information.

So who would use this? I might take it down to Disneyland. Who's surprised at this news? I'm not. I can't imagine that it'll happen - & that's not even factoring in all of the opposition against it.

The High Speed Rail Authority openly lied to the public to steal $9 billion from us–they lied about the potential ridership, they liked about the capitol cost of the system, refused to tell how much in subsidies would be needed to run it and they lied about the source of funding to build it.

They now admit it will cost $100 billion–they told us “only” $40 billion. They admit they lied about the ridership–they doubled what is to be expected. Now in ten years, since the beginning of the project, not a single private investors put up a dime–all the money will have to come from the taxpayers.

“The California High-Speed Rail Authority board voted unanimously Thursday to seek the Legislature’s permission to use $2.7 billion in state bond money to help start construction of the planned $98.5-billion train system.

The 6-0 vote came after more than two hours of public testimony in Sacramento from dozens of critics of the troubled plan, which would connect Anaheim and San Francisco with 220-mph bullet trains. The board voted without discussion.

The Rail Authority needs the state funds to qualify for $3.3 billion in federal stimulus money that can’t be spent unless most of it is matched. The plan is to start construction in mid-to-late 2012 in the Central Valley.”

Like Solyndra, SunPower and numerous other government “investments” this will go bankrupt. This is about paying off unions and special interests, it is not about transportation. If such a system was needed and could be profitable, the private sector would build it. Since it is a gigantic money loser those faceless people running the show want to steal billions more from the California taxpayer, in order to steal billions from the3 Federal taxpayers. We still have jail cells for those who steal from the public treasury via lying.

The San Jose Mercury seems to have a lot more information on the goings on of our area than this sanitized version of schedules, costs and latest dealings.
Although it is difficult to not read the conclusions of our "regulars" who could pass for CAIN.....I mean Kane..As in John Foster Kane.

All this was predicted well before the November 2008 elections when this project was kicked in gear. We've been lied to from the very beginning. This was never intended to be a railroad project. It was a political pork distribution project from its inception.

All that blather about the economy, jobs, the future. . . .all smoke and mirrors.

So, I ask all of us on the Peninsula: Had enough? Tired of being treated like a sucker?

What are you going to do about it?

The HSR is basically a symbol to put the millions of Americans who are out of work and those who would be part of creating new middle class SMALLER businesses and more labor force jobs.......I still notice a lot of legal immigrants working all over the county(WITHOUT LEAF BLOWERS), but they too, are not settling for the old pay rates. Now they are demanding medical, health and dental plans included in their pay checks; and they should get it for doing work that unemployed college graduates and former rich kids would not do.
People who hate HSR do not realize that the labor force to build it, is going to come from a very surprising place and that the ensuing arguments will make the HSR going through the Peninsula to SF from LA a viable argument.
The big homes will still exist, the gripes will be for less charter schools and paying MORE to GOOD teachers, librarians and more for the future of the kids who basically are the inheritors of all of you, who fight progress, be the winners for the future. Not just for those who are worried about your Monopoly Game existence.
FIRST ATTEMPT FILMED AND CORRECT.
