Jet Ski patrols proposed for Mavericks

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office on Thursday will present a plan to federal officials that could provide for a voluntary Jet Ski patrol for the safety of surfers at the famous Mavericks break.

The county has no money for very basic things. If people want to surf at Mavericks they assume the risk, and the tax payers should not be funding something like this when that money could benefit broader areas of public safety than this. To train, outfit, and pay such patrols would just be financing people taking avoidable risks and putting the patrol persons at risk too.

Totally agree with you, Janet. Why don't they allow Jet Skis and then the surfers can patrol themselves? Each participant in this very narrow activity therefore assumes the associated risk.

it's a "voluntary" patrol. Doesn't cost the county anything.
