During the 1980's Phyllis Cangemi, a disabled woman led the effort for Flood Park to become an international model for what could be accomplished to establish a park friendly to disabled people. San Mateo County spent $800,000 on the renovation as restrooms, water fountains, swings and benches were adjusted to accommodate the disabled and paths created so wheelchairs could easily reach sandboxes and grassy areas.
Fast forward to 2011 and Flood Park is being considered for closure by San Mateo County, being offered to Menlo Park for city use as an option.
In the spirit of Phyllis Cangemi, let us step forward and not allow her dream and work die with her.
