The name might have done it in. In Yiddish alta means old, as in alta cocker which is a not so nice slang for old man.

This is an interesting fast fact -- wouldn't it be great to see the trend over the past 20 years (a few business cycles)? Also, what about a comparison with Palo Alto and Redwood City ... and maybe San Jose?
Not trying to make work for you, Sandy, but the Almanac has a real opportunity to educate all of us in how our community changes and how it behaves relative to our neighbors'.
(Atherton, forgive me for not including, but I don't believe you have any businesses ... at least of the retail sort? Include Atherton if there are ... but that also suggests analyzing multiple kinds of licenses, those for home-based consulting or service businesses, those for retail businesses, and those for other businesses. Could be a very interesting comparative article about the changing work demographics of MP and surrounding towns.)
