I wonder how many County Public employees lost thier jobs during the same time period. Chances are that the publid employee sector grew quite generously. Remember the public secot depends on the private sector for its support. When the pulic sector is greater than the private sector then the house of cards falls down.

re: your wonderment above - answer: probably the same ratio as in previous recessions, such as the Reagan and Bush 1 recessions in the 80's, or earlier this decade.

Most economists will agree, the worst thing to do in a recession is to cause more job losses. In a broad sense, we need to get the economy moving again, and the best way is to retain as many middle class jobs as possible, all contributing their taxes to get revenues back up to previous levels.

Layoffs and discharges as a percentage of the labor force in 2009 for private sector was 24.1% and for the public sector was 7.2%.
