Atherton council opts for its own compromise

Original post made on Nov 29, 2010

It's only one, short street made up of small lots, but Parker Avenue in Atherton has been the source of one big, prolonged headache for the town's staff, Planning Commission and City Council. Although it appears that the headache might finally be over, the medicine is bitter for many to swallow.

Could somebody explain why this issue was not resolved by having the one or two residents who wanted special changes to sim;y request a standard variance for their expansion plans? Why has so much time and effort gone into complete zoning ordinance changes that effect an entire neighborhood when so few neighbors even wanted this at all? Now it has caused devision amongst the council, and between the council and the planning commission as well as the entire neighborhood.
Yet another really bad leadership decision and I just can not understand why. Does the council even understand the concept of why there are rules in the first place, for people to play fair by? There was a variance request option available instead of all this!

Once again, the squeaky wheels get the oil. FOKMs (Friends of Kathy McKeithen) rule the day.

The backer(s) of this change, probably won't rebuild or expand. Yet, they win big, because the Town just increased their build-able footage. Their lots will increase in value upon the second reading of the ordinance.

I'm sure the Planning Commission members are wondering why they even bother. What a waste of time, effort, and credibility. That's how the Town Council takes care of its volunteers. Look for resignations and turnover on the committee.

Transparency? I guess this one went by the numbers. Apparently compliance with the Brown Act isn't the answer to all of the Town's problems. But, the next election just might be!

Come on you guys! I grew up in the town and when I was in school you took care of things in the right way!I had friends on Council and sat in on many meetings. Wake up and simply do what is right.
